You’ve chosen your label material. Your artwork is ready. Now there’s another decision to make:

Should your labels have a matte or gloss finish?

The answer isn’t simply about which one looks better.

Your label’s finish can influence how customers perceive your product, how colors appear, how the label feels in someone’s hand, and how the finished packaging presents your brand.

At Xceptional Labels, we offer both matte and gloss lamination for digitally printed product labels. Here’s what you should know before choosing.

What Is Label Lamination?

Lamination is a thin protective film applied over the printed surface of a label.

Think of it as an additional layer between your printed artwork and the outside world.

Depending on the application, lamination can help protect the printed surface from things such as moisture, rubbing, oils, and frequent handling while also changing the appearance and feel of the label.

At Xceptional Labels, two of our primary finishing options are:

Matte Lamination

Gloss Lamination

Both can create beautiful professional labels—but they create very different looks.

What Is Gloss Lamination?

Gloss lamination creates a smooth, shiny, reflective surface.

If you want colors to appear bold, rich, and vibrant, gloss is often an excellent option.

Because gloss reflects more light, it can give product packaging a bright, polished appearance that attracts attention.

Gloss Lamination May Be a Good Choice For:

  • Beverages

  • Food products

  • Sauces and condiments

  • Supplements

  • Vitamins

  • Household products

  • Pet products

  • Colorful or highly photographic label designs

  • Products where you want bright colors to stand out

If your artwork contains vibrant photography, fruit, colorful illustrations, or bold branding, gloss can help emphasize those elements.

What Is Matte Lamination?

Matte lamination creates a softer, non-glossy appearance with less reflection.

Instead of emphasizing shine, matte tends to create a more subtle and refined presentation.

Depending on the artwork and packaging, matte can give a product a sophisticated, modern, natural, or premium feel.

Matte Lamination May Be a Good Choice For:

  • Cosmetics

  • Skincare products

  • Premium supplements

  • Wellness products

  • Specialty foods

  • Natural products

  • Minimalist packaging

  • Products designed around a softer or more sophisticated brand identity

Matte can work particularly well with simple typography, neutral colors, minimalist artwork, and brands looking for a more understated appearance.

Matte vs. Gloss: Which Makes Colors Look Better?

Both can produce beautiful colors, but they affect how we perceive those colors differently.

Gloss lamination reflects more light and can make colors appear:

Brighter • Richer • More Saturated • More Vibrant

Matte lamination reduces reflection and can make colors feel:

Softer • More Subtle • Muted • Refined

This doesn’t necessarily mean that the CMYK values printed underneath have changed.

The surface finish changes how light interacts with the label—and therefore how your eye perceives the color.

This is especially important if you’re trying to match an existing product label.

Can the Same Artwork Look Different With Matte and Gloss?

Absolutely.

You could print the exact same artwork using the exact same CMYK values and apply matte lamination to one label and gloss lamination to another.

The finished labels may feel surprisingly different.

That’s why we encourage customers to think about the entire package rather than evaluating artwork only on a computer screen.

Your final label is the combination of:

Artwork + CMYK Printing + Material + Lamination + Finishing

Each component contributes to the finished result.

Does Lamination Protect My Labels?

Lamination isn’t only decorative.

The additional film layer can also provide added protection to the printed surface.

This may be particularly valuable for products that experience:

  • Frequent handling

  • Moisture

  • Refrigeration

  • Condensation

  • Oils

  • Rubbing during transportation or use

However, lamination doesn’t automatically make every label suitable for every environment.

The face material, adhesive, container, application conditions, storage environment, and expected exposure should all be considered when selecting a label construction.

White BOPP + Gloss Lamination

One popular combination is White BOPP with gloss lamination.

White BOPP is a film-based label material that works well for many applications where moisture resistance and durability are important.

Adding gloss lamination creates a smooth, polished finish that can make colorful artwork stand out.

This combination may work particularly well for products such as beverages, sauces, supplements, and other products where both durability and visual impact are important.

White BOPP + Matte Lamination

White BOPP can also be paired with matte lamination.

This gives you many of the practical advantages of a film-based material while creating a softer, less reflective appearance.

For brands looking for durability without a high-shine finish, White BOPP with matte lamination can be an attractive option.

Semi-Gloss Paper + Gloss Lamination

Semi-gloss paper provides a traditional paper label construction.

Adding gloss lamination can give the printed surface additional protection while creating a brighter, more reflective appearance.

This can be a good option for products used primarily in dry environments where the customer wants the look and economics of paper combined with a polished finish.

Semi-Gloss Paper + Matte Lamination

Semi-gloss paper paired with matte lamination creates another distinctive look.

The combination can provide a softer visual presentation and may work particularly well for brands seeking a simple, natural, or understated aesthetic.

As with any paper construction, the product’s actual environment should be considered before selecting it for applications involving significant moisture.

Which Finish Looks More Expensive?

This is a common question, but there isn’t one universal answer.

Matte is often associated with premium, sophisticated, minimalist packaging.

Gloss can communicate vibrancy, freshness, energy, and boldness.

But good packaging isn’t about choosing the finish people say is more expensive.

It’s about choosing the finish that supports your particular brand.

A colorful beverage may look fantastic with gloss.

A minimalist skincare brand may look beautiful with matte.

Switch those finishes and the products could communicate something completely different.

Consider Your Entire Package

Before choosing matte or gloss, look beyond the label itself.

Consider:

  • Your container color

  • Your product category

  • Your logo

  • Your brand colors

  • Your competitors

  • Where the product will be displayed

  • Whether it will be refrigerated

  • How customers will handle it

  • Whether your design is colorful or minimalist

  • The overall impression you want your packaging to create

Your label doesn’t exist by itself.

It becomes part of the complete product your customer sees on a shelf, receives in a shipment, holds in their hand, photographs, and hopefully purchases again.

Not Sure? See and Feel the Difference.

Sometimes reading about matte and gloss isn’t enough.

You need to see them and touch them.

A computer screen can’t reproduce the physical difference between a reflective gloss surface and the softer appearance of matte lamination.

That’s why physical label samples can be extremely useful when you’re making packaging decisions.

At Xceptional Labels, we want customers to understand what they’re purchasing before committing to their production labels.
