7 Common Label Mistakes That Can Cost Your Brand
You’ve spent time developing your product, building your brand, choosing your packaging, and getting everything ready to sell. Then comes one detail that can easily be underestimated: the label.
A label may seem like a small part of your product, but it is often one of the first things your customer notices. It communicates your brand, identifies your product, and can influence how professional and trustworthy your product feels.
At Xceptional Labels, we believe a great label starts long before we hit “print.”
Here are seven common label mistakes we see—and how you can avoid them.
1. Choosing the Wrong Label Material
Not every label material works for every product.
A beautiful paper label may be perfect for one application but completely wrong for a product that will be exposed to moisture, refrigeration, oils, or frequent handling.
For example, White BOPP is a popular option when moisture resistance and durability are important, while semi-gloss paper can be an excellent and economical choice for many dry products and indoor applications.
Before choosing your material, think about where your product will be stored and how it will be used.
Will it get wet?
Will it be refrigerated?
Will customers handle it frequently?
What type of container will the label be applied to?
The prettiest material isn’t necessarily the best material. The goal is to choose one that both looks good and performs well.
2. Using Low-Resolution Artwork
Your logo may look perfectly clear on your phone or computer screen but still print blurry or pixelated.
Professional printing requires artwork with enough resolution to reproduce small details, text, and graphics clearly.
Whenever possible, provide your printer with a high-resolution PDF or vector artwork rather than a screenshot or low-resolution image downloaded from the internet.
And if designing labels isn’t your specialty, that’s okay.
At Xceptional Labels, our in-house designer can review your artwork and help prepare it for printing. We can also create professional label artwork for you for an additional design fee.
You don’t have to figure everything out alone.
3. Forgetting About Bleed and Safe Margins
This one sounds technical, but the concept is simple.
Labels are printed and then cut. Because cutting can have slight movement, artwork that is supposed to reach the edge of your label needs to extend slightly beyond the final cut line. This extra area is called bleed.
At the same time, important information such as your logo, ingredients, product name, or contact information shouldn’t sit too close to the edge.
That’s your safe area.
Proper bleed and safe margins help prevent unwanted white edges or important information from being cut off.
4. Designing Only for the Screen
Your computer, tablet, and phone create color using light. Printing creates color using ink or toner.
That means a color you see on your screen will not always look exactly the same when printed.
Commercial printing typically uses CMYK: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black.
If you’re designing your own label, especially using programs such as Canva, it’s important to understand that bright screen colors may reproduce differently in print.
If a particular brand color is extremely important to you, let your printer know before production begins.
A little communication before printing can prevent a big disappointment afterward.
5. Choosing a Finish Based Only on Appearance
Gloss, matte, or velvet soft-touch?
The finish you choose can completely change how your customer experiences your product—and it isn’t only about appearance.
A gloss laminate gives labels a shiny, polished appearance and can make colors look vibrant and eye-catching.
A matte laminate creates a smooth, understated look that works beautifully for brands looking for a clean, modern feel.
For something even more distinctive, velvet soft-touch lamination adds a luxurious, velvety feel to the label. It creates a premium tactile experience that customers can actually feel when they pick up your product—making it a beautiful option for cosmetics, wellness products, specialty foods, candles, and other premium packaging.
Sometimes the difference between an ordinary package and one that feels special is something you don’t just see.
You feel it.
At Xceptional Labels, we can help you choose a finish that complements both your brand and the environment where your product will be used.
6. Not Testing the Label on the Actual Container
This is one of the easiest mistakes to avoid.
Before committing to a large quantity, consider how your label will actually fit and perform on your packaging.
A label going onto a flat box behaves differently from one wrapping around a small bottle. Containers can have curves, seams, textures, tapers, and other features that affect how a label fits.
Even the size that looks right on a computer screen may feel completely different once placed on the actual product.
Whenever possible, measure carefully and test your label size on the real container.
Your label shouldn’t just look good by itself.
It needs to look good on your product.
7. Leaving Labels Until the Last Minute
Your product is ready.
The containers arrived.
The event is next week.
And then someone realizes…
We still need labels!
Labels are sometimes treated as one of the final steps of product development, but they should be considered much earlier.
Your label may require artwork adjustments, material selection, proofing, printing, laminating, cutting, and finishing.
Planning ahead gives you time to make thoughtful decisions instead of rushing through one of the most visible parts of your product.
At Xceptional Labels, we specialize in short-run digital label printing with fast turnaround times, but planning ahead will always give you more flexibility.
Your Label Is Part of Your Brand
Your label isn’t simply something you stick onto a container.
It’s part of the experience you’re creating for your customer.
The right material, artwork, color, finish, size, and printing can take a product from homemade-looking to polished and professional.
And you don’t need to know everything about labels before contacting a printer.
That’s what we’re here for.
At Xceptional Labels, we work with businesses at different stages—from entrepreneurs preparing their first product to established companies needing reliable label production.
We’ll help you understand your options and find a solution that works for your product, your brand, and your quantity.
